Show Notes:

LearningTimes Executive Producer Jonathan Finkelstein hijacks the LTGreen Room to interview co-hosts Susan Manning and Dan Balzer. This is their 50th show of the LT Green Room. What makes them tick. Why do they do it?

Who wouldn't want to sit down with colleagues and have stimulating intellectual discussions about what's going on in education and technology, asks Susan. It's also an opportunity to connect with "scouts" -- people who can provide insights on where the world is headed and what's going on in other areas.

After 50 shows of the LTGR, what advice can Dan and Susan give to others beginning to podcast?

  • Keep it short
  • Plan ahead, so you can keep the show focused

Susan and Dan don't try to give the 500-page book version of a topic, but rather try to get listeners interested in a concept with enough resources to start their own exploration. Have something of consequence to share, a core idea, meaningful resources, or an expert guest who has done something practical around the topic at hand. What are some of the things that have happened behind the scenes with the LT Green Room that we might not otherwise know about? Susan recalls her dog getting friendly with Stacy, their guest on the storytelling podcast (Ep. #36).Dan describe show he and Susan sometimes pass notes back and forth from time to time to communicate during tapings, or virtual notes when they are recording remotely.

What kinds of feedback have they received that has been most moving or surprising? Dan and Susan describe how moving it was to know that at least one listener was enjoying their podcasts while hospital-bound, recovering from surgery. They have also really appreciated the resources people are so willing to share.

Do Susan and Dan ever have reason to go back and listen to their previous shows? Susan talks about how she will refer specific shows to her students when she is teaching. Dan will refer to certain shows during conference presentations.

Dan suggests that when you can, don't use specific dated events, to keep shows "fresh" even for listeners a year or so from now.
